Smart Metering
One of those markets is smart metering. An area that WAVE2M will be focusing their standard technology is for smart metering in the gas and water industry.
A smart meter is one that is capable of two-way communication. It measures energy consumption in the same way as traditional methods, but it has a communication ability that allows data to be read remotely and displayed on a device in the home, or transmitted securely to external sources. The meter can also receive information remotely, to update tariff information or to switch from credit to prepay mode.
The smart meters will have an in-home display (IHD) and will give you up to date information on how much energy you've used, in pounds, pence and units of energy. Consumers will get accurate bills and will be able to save money, whilst suppliers cut out the need for manual meter reading.
WAVE2M aims to create a standardised technology that can be adopted in many industries, smart metering is just one of those.
Standardisation enables the industry to be efficient and integrated and currently by using multiple standards this means devices can't communicate properly.
